
Yaw Sarpong, one of Ghana’s most respected gospel musicians and founder of the Asomafo Band, has died. He passed away on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at Emena Hospital in Kumasi.
Veteran gospel singer Yaw Sarpong, famous for shaping contemporary Ghanaian gospel music, has passed away at the age of 66. His death was confirmed by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis, to multiple media outlets including MyJoyOnline and Adomonline.

Yaw Sarpong’s career spanned more than four decades. He was the leader of the Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo Band, a group that became one of the most influential in Ghana’s gospel music scene.
He produced many songs that became staples in churches and homes across the country. Some of his hits include “Wo Haw Ne Sen,” “Tie Obiaa,” “Aduro Yesu,” and “Awurade Kasa,” many of which are still sung today.
For his contributions to music, Sarpong received several awards, including a Lifetime Achievement award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards in 2025.
Reports say he had been struggling with ill health for some time before his death, often stepping back from public life to focus on treatment and recovery.

News of his passing has sparked an outpouring of condolences from fans, fellow musicians, and public figures across Ghana. Award-winning rapper Sarkodie posted a heartfelt tribute, saying Sarpong’s music helped strengthen his faith in God.
Residents in Kumasi, where Sarpong spent his final days, have also urged the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) and government to honor his legacy and contributions to gospel music history.
